Iridology, drastic lifestyle change may help

By: Rochester Business Journal Staff June 27, 2008

Carla Buscaglia believes mainstream medicine is not the right solution for a number of people who are looking to better their health and lives. So, she offers alternatives through her practice, Global Nutrition.
“Mainstream medicine isn’t working for a lot of people,” Buscaglia says. “I focus on alternative medicine, along with food, supplements and changes in lifestyles.”
The 44-year-old started Global Nutrition in 2000, after seeking help to treat her ailments. Buscaglia suffered from fibromyalgia, diverticulitis and hyperthyroidism and had gained weight. She says the physicians she visited suggested medicine that merely masked the symptoms. It was when she was put on an all-natural remedy program that Buscaglia began to see results, she says.
That success prompted her to study alternative medicine. Buscaglia is a certified nutritionist, master herbalist and student of iridology. Iridology, an alternative medicine technique, involves the examination of the iris to diagnose disease.
“Iridology is how I find out (patients’) health concerns,” Buscaglia says.
Using an iridology chart, developed by Bernard Jensen M.D., that shows what parts of the body correlate with parts of the eye, Buscaglia says she can determine health risks.
“I go all around the chart and write it all down and we make a customized program for you,” she says. “Every eye is different.”
Buscaglia says iridology is helpful in determining health in all areas of the body. For example, if a patient needs a chiropractic adjustment, the iridology chart would indicate the need for one.
Located on East Avenue, Global Nutrition offers its services to those in search of alternate medicine. It does not serve as a full-time physician but acts as an alternative, Buscaglia says.
She says a majority of her clients have given up on mainstream medicine.
“It’s mostly people that have been through the gamut of mainstream medicine. They’re on 40 to 50 meds and over (the age of) 35,” Buscaglia adds.
Global Nutrition customizes programs for adults and children. One of its most popular programs is the rigorous Turn Back the Clock program, aimed at fortysomethings who want to “keep their youth, get their energy back or get their weight back to where it’s supposed to be,” Buscaglia says.
It lasts three to four months with weekly visits and calls for a “drastic change in lifestyle,” she says.
“I even have a hard time following it,” Buscaglia says. “(Results) depend on how strict you’re willing to be and how much you’re willing to change.
“A lot of guys think they can still drink like they did when they were 20.”
Heavy drinkers who join the program will need to cut down on alcohol. Eating habits may also have to change and exercise will need to become regular. These changes are often difficult for some people to accomplish in such a short time, Buscaglia says.
Programs offered by Global Nutrition are not covered by insurance and cost $110 for the initial visit and an additional $65 for each visit after that. The firm sees anywhere from 300 to 600 patients a year, and “has doubled in size since 2007,” Buscaglia says.
She keeps tabs on trends in her field. Buscaglia continues to study her practice by completing online courses offered by the Australian School of Herbal Medicine.
“I pay to talk to anti-aging doctors all over the world,” she says. “I talk to them on a monthly basis and get all the latest and greatest information.”
Buscaglia expects her practice to grow. Currently she is Global Nutrition’s sole employee, but she hopes to add another person in iridology.
Global Nutrition relies on word-of-mouth referrals. Her practice has helped many people get into better shape, Buscaglia says.
“It is the results … that’s my advertisement,” she says. “My biggest thing is when I was sick, I was bedridden. It was terrible. I had no hope.
“That’s what I want to give my clients is hope.”
